Age-of-Information With Information Source Diversity in an Energy Harvesting System

Age of information (AoI) is a key performance metric for the Internet things (IoT). Timely status updates are essential many IoT applications; however, they often suffer from harsh energy constraints and unreliability underlying sources. To overcome these unpredictabilities, one can employ multiple sources that track same process interest, but with different costs reliabilities. We consider an energy-harvesting (EH) monitoring node equipped finite-size battery collecting heterogeneous investigate policies minimize average AoI, formulating Markov decision (MDP) to choose optimal actions either updating or remaining idle, based on current level AoI at node. analyze structure solution cost/AoI distribution combinations, compare its aggressive policy transmits whenever possible.
